Fifty Years an Odd Fellow and Active
Josiah Buzzard Passed Away After Long and Useful Life as Blacksmith __ Many Others Deaths Noted
Josiah Buzzard, of Ann Street, one of Stroudsburg's oldest and best known citizens, died at his late home on Sunday morning after a prolonged illness with a complication of diseases. Deceased was born at Bangor November 13, 1840, and moved to this town about 26 years ago.
He was a blacksmith by trade and when he moved to this town he build a small shop on Ann street. This building proved too small for his growing trade and from time to time additions were erected. Finally he was compelled to build a large struture containing a weelwright shop, paint shop, storage rooms and blacksmith shop. This he operated for a number of years when, on account of his age, he retired from the buiness. His son, Eli, also a blacksmth, conducted the business established by his father until the present time.
Mr. Buzzard was a veteran of the Civil War and served three years udner General Sherman. He was a member of Wadsworth Post, No. 150, G. A. R., of this town; Odd Fellows and the Evangelical church, of Bangor. He was a member of the Odd Fellows for the past fifty years and was an enthusiastic worker in the order.
Besides his widow, two sisters, Mrs. P. J. Albert and Mrs. Marshall Hutchison, of Bangor; two sons, Eli and Edwrd Buzzard, of this town; survive. The funeral services will be held at his late home, 535 Ann Street, of Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Amos Johnson, pastor of the local M. E. Church, and Rev. M. W. Ettinger, pastor of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church, officiating. Interment at the Stroudsburg cemetery. |
