Soldier Honored For Gallantry dies in France
Technical Sgt. William R. Benn Jr., 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Benn, of Easton R.D. 3, was killed in action with the infantry D-Day (June 6) in France, according to a War Department telegram received by his parents Sunday.

Sgt. Benn, a veteran of the invasions of North Africa and Sicily as well as in the Normandy Assult, had been overseas since July 1942. He was sent first to England and then to North Africa where he participated in seven major battles.

While in Africa he won the Silver Star for gallantry in action when he captured 28 Germans and a truck single-handed. After the Sicilian campaign Sgt. Benn was sent to England where he was promoted to technical sergeant.

He was entitled to wear the ribbon for the Eureopean Theater of Operations with three stars, the American Defense ribbon, and the Army Good Conduct ribbon.

Sgt. Benn entered service Nov. 19, 1940. He was stationed at Fort Dix. NJ; Fort Jay, NY: Fort Devens, Mass; and several other camps in this country before leaving for overseas duty.

Sgt. Benn was a member of the St. John's Evangelical Reformed Church of Nazareth.

He is survived by his parents and eight sisters and three brothers. The sisters are Mrs. Paul Werkheiser, of Baltimore, MD; Mrs. Wilbert Mengle of Butztown, Mrs. Jacob Beers, with her husband at an air base in Missouri; and Misses Edith, Virginia, Shirley, Carol and Ruth Benn, at home.

The brothers are Donald R. Benn, petty officer 2-c, serving with the Navy in the South Pacific; and James and John Benn at home.
