Harry M. Albert, 67, Executive of Insurance Firm.
Harry M. Albert, 67, an official of a large Stroudsburg insurance firm and a former Stroudsburg borough secretary, died yesterday afternoon in the Monroe County, General Hospital, East Stroudsburg.
Mr. Albert who lived at 520 Thomas St., Stroudsburg, was stricken with a heart attack at 10 a.m. yesterday while attending the opening of the Jay-Al store near his office. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance and died at 1:59 p.m.
He was secretary-treasurer and manger of the E. A. Bell Insurance Co. 616 Main St. with which he had been Associated since 1919. The firm is 82 years old and is affiliated with leading stocking companies.
Before joining the Bell company as secretary, Mr. Albert taught at the Stroudsburg High School, was first news report for the Stroudsburg Record, in1916, and was a bookkeeper and later a teller for the Stroudsburg national Bank. In World War I he was active in the sale of Liberty bond.
He was borough secretary for Stroudsburg for 10 years, borough auditor for two terms and was instrumental in the organization of the Stroudsburg Trust Company.
Mr. Albert was one of 12 insurance men chosen to serve the advisers to the Pennsylvania insurance commissioner in 1935. He had made frequent trips to Harrisburg in that capacity. An active Republican, he was a past president and treasurer of the Monroe County GOP Committee. He was known through the state as a master of ceremonies.
Born in Mount Bethel, he was a son of the late Samuel and Sarah Felker Albert. He was graduated from Stroudsburg High School in 1909 and lived most of his lie in Stroudsburg.
He was past president of the Stroudsburg Rotary Club, Stroudsburg Alumni Association, and the Stroudsburg Businessmen’s Association, past president and treasurer of the Cripple Children’s Society; past director and president of the Monroe County Insurance Agents Board and the Pennsylvania State Association of Independent Insurance Agents, past director of the Monroe Chapter American Red Cross, the Monroe County General Hospital and YMCA; treasurer of the Sabbath School Association and member of the Pocono Mountains Motor Club.
As a Mason he belonged to Badger Lodge, F&AM; St. John’s Commandery, Knights of Malta and the Fort Penn Lodge, Odd Fellows.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Leila W. Albert; two daughters, S. Kathryn, wife of Jack Mullins and Mrs. Jane Spirko, both of Stroudsburg, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Clark Funeral Home, Stroudsburg. |
