Dr. Leigh M. Lott, headed schools in Hackettstown
Dr. Leigh M. Lott, 87, former superintendent of schools in Hackettstown, d ied Tuesday in heath Village, Washington Township.
He was superintendent of schools in Hackettstown from 1946 until 1959, dur ing which time the present high school was constructed. Following his reti rement in 1959, he taught at Centenary College, Hackettstown, for sever al years. Before coming to Hackettstown, Dr. Lott served as superintende nt of schools in Frenchtown, Salem and Bridgeton, N.J.
He was born in Carbondale, Pa.
A graduate of Wesleyan University, he received his master?s degree in educ ation from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1976, he received the Distin guished Alumni Award from Wesleyan University.
During World War II, Dr. Lott was a combat intelligence officer servi ng in the North African, Italian and Austrian campaigns. He received an ho norary doctorate from the University of Vienna for his help in locating a nd securing school supplies and equipment which had been dispersed duri ng the Nazi occupation.
Surviving are his wife, the former Helen Jones; a son, Robert of Levittow n, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. Millicent Palmer, Millington, N.J., and six grand children.
Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Cochran Funeral Home, Hac kettstown. Interment will be in Jersey Mills Cemetery, Jersey Mills, Pa. |
