Josiah B. Woodring
Josiah B. Woodring, a prominent four and feed dealer and cattle driver, and who was recently elected market clerk of Bethlehem, died in St. Luke’s Hospital Thursday afternoon, after having undergone three operations Since being taken to the hospital 10 days ago. Mr. Woodring was born in Williams township on May 30, 1838 one of the eleven children of Philip M. Woodring and Elizabeth (Brotzman) Woodring. He is the last of the family, the only other brother dying in Pittsburg, five months ago. Going to Bethlehem, he opened a flour and feed store, said to be the first of its kind there. He sold out to go to Stockertown, where he operated a flour and grist mill. There he and his family spent four years, followed by four yours more at Zuck’s mill on the Bushkill creek. For three years after this, he worked Shimer’s farm, in Lower Saucon, and then went to Illick’s mill, along the Monocacy creek. From 1885 to 1887 Mr. Woodring was a cattle drover, making trips to Buffalo and the West each May to ship cars of cattle to this section. Five children survive him, as follows: Harvey K., Emaus; George P., West Bethlehem, William J., at home, Frank L. Jenkintown, and Anna E. at home.
