Car, Out of Control, Strikes and Kills Miss Rosa Seifert
Distressing Accident at Thirteenth and Wood Streets as Hundreds Were on Way to Work
Miss Rosa B. Seifert, a picker, employed at the Simon's silk mil, was run down and almost instantly killed at 6:40 o'clock this morning at Wood and Thirteenth street by an automobile driven by Alvin Werkheiser, 21, of 2327 Forest street. Werkheiser suffered a fracture of the left arm and Howard Yeager 22, of 1844 Freemansburg avenue, who was riding in the car, was cut by broken glass. Werkheiser is in the Easton Hospital.

According to Werkheiser and Yeager something went wrong with the rear end of the car and it could not be controlled. This statement is said to have been borne out by an automobile mechanic who made an examination of the machine after the accident. The car was badly wrecked.

Werkheiser and Yeager were on their way to work at the Doyle Da-Costa plant near Bushkill Park, and were descending the Thirteenth street hill from Bushkill street, when something happened to the machine. Yeager say Werkheiser called to him that he had no control of the car. Yeager looked back and while he was thus engaged Werkheiser turned west into Wood Street. Yeager says he did not see the accident and did not know that Miss Seifert had been hit until the crowd began to collect.

Werkheiser, fearing to continue down the steep grade on Thirteenth street from Wood toward the Simon mill, decided to turn into Wood, whish is level at that point. In doing so he narrowly missed striking a party of four on their way to the silk mill. It is reported that miss, who was also on the Thirteenth and Wood Streets crossing, on her way to work, stepped back and directly into the path of the car and was struck. She was knocked a short distance. She suffered a fracture of the base of the skull and her back. A passing automobile put her into his car and rushed her to the hospital. She was dead when she reached the institution, and the surgeons believe that death was practically instantaneous.

After the card struck Miss Seifert, it ran against a tree stump and then toppled over on the stump. The fender was broken and the top smashed.

Werkheiser received his injury when the car struck the tree stump but Yeager was not hurt until he began to crawl from the wreckage. Then is was that his hand came into contact with broken glass. He received a bad cut and was taken to the office of Dr. Krebs for treatment.

The distressing accident caused much excitement and attracted hundreds of employees of the mills in the neighborhood who were on their way to work. Werkheiser is a son of Mr. and Milton Werkheiser with him whom he and his wife and child reside. Yeager lives with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Yeager, Miss Seifert resides at 1613 Butler Street.

Miss Seifert was a daughter of Emma and the late Levi Seifert and would have been 52 years old had she lived until November 9, next. For the past 35 years she resided with Mr. and Mrs. I.P. Richards. She is survived by her mother, who is 81 years old, four sisters, Mrs. Richards, Mrs. Irwin Steckel and Mrs. William Merwarth, of Easton and Mrs. Monroe Brotzman of Williams Township, and two brothers, Joseph Seifert, of Easton, and Purman Seifert of Williams Township. Miss Seifert was member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Williams Township.
