Dr. Bruce H. Rice, Surgeon, Navy Officer
Dr. Bruce Harold Rice, 48, a surgeon and Easton Native, died yesterday in his home, Irish Lane, Towns of Cambridge, N.Y., R.D.2.
He was a member of the surgical staff of Mary McClellan Hospital, Cambridge, from July 1969 until July 1979, when he was taken ill.
A 1948 graduate of Wilson High School, he received an A.B. degree in chemistry in 1952 from Lafayette College. He received a doctorial degree in medicine from the Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, in 1956, and served as an intern and a general surgical resident doctor at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md., from 1957 to 1961.
In 1962 he was named as a diplomat to the American Board of Surgery and in 1964 as a fellow to the American College of Surgeons.
A qualified Submarine Medical Officer in 1965, he served in the U.S. Navy as a medical officer commissioning crew on the USS Constellation CVA 64, the USS Henry Clay SSBN 625, and USS George Bancroft SSBN 643. He made a submerged Polaris submarine patrol on the USS Henry Clay.
He was the author of the medical papers entitled "Intestinal Bleeding and Perforation Complicating Vascoconstrictor Drugs" in the Annals of Surgery, November 1959, and "Conservative, Non-Surgical Management of Appendicitis" in Military Medicine, October 1964.
He was chief of surgery and director of the clinical services in the Navel Submarine Center, Groton, Conn., form 1965 yo 1969. In July 1969 he was discharged from the Navy.
Born in Easton, on Oct 13, 1930, he was a son of Malcolm M. Rice, Palmer Township, chairman of the board and former president of Easton Printing Co., and the late Hazel Mae Frankenfield Rice.
He as a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilson.
Surviving in addition to his father are his stepmother, Esther Rice, Palmer Township; a sister, ****, Fanwood, N.J; a brother, Barry M. of Palmer Township; three nephews and two nieces.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilson. Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine. The Strunk Funeral Home, Easton, is in charge of arrangements. |
