Margaret Laros Shelton, 76, of Bethlehem, died Friday in her home.

She was instrumental in the founding of the Girls Club of Bethlehem and served as its president.

Involved in the community, she was president of the Junior League of Bethlehem in 1944, and did work for the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, St. Luke's Hospital Ladies Aide Society and Planned Parenthood.

She held the title of Ladies Golf Champion at Saucon Valley Country Club 21 times, a record that has never been challenged. She also won many tournaments at clubs throughout the country and held many women's scoring records.

She was the valedictorian of her class at Moravian Seminary and College for Women, and graduated from Pine Manor College, Chestnut Hill, Mass., where she was president of her class. Following college, she pursued studies in piano at Julliard School of Music, New York City.

Born in Bethlehem, she was a daughter of the late Russell K. and Helen (Kostenbader) Laros.

She was active in the Laros Foundation, founded after the death of her father, owner and operator of the former R.K. Laros Industries, Bethlehem, and made charitable contributions mainly in the Bethlehem area.

Over the years the foundation contributed to many charities including the Moravian Music Foundation, Historic Bethlehem Inc. and the Bethlehem Bicentennial celebration.

Survivors: Sons, ***** of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and ***** of New York City; sisters, ***** of Philadelphia and ***** of Waynesville, N.C., and brother, ***** of San Francisco, Calif.

Memorial services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, First Presbyterian Church, Bethlehem. Arrangements, Snyder-Hinkle-Spatig Funeral Home, Bethlehem.
