Aged Man Ends Life By Hanging
William A. Kline, Long Hotel Clerk, was Formerly School Teacher
William A. Kline, 78 years old, night clerk at the Post Office
Hotel for the past year, ended his life this morning by hanging
himself in the cellar of his home at 49 McCartney street,
college Hill. His lifeless body was discovered hanging from
a rafter by his wife, Mrs. Mary Kline. No reason for the
act can be advanced by his family.
Mr. Kline was in the habit of quitting work about 5 or 6
o’clock each morning but today left his employment
about 3 o’clock and went to his home. Mrs. Kline thought
he had gone to bed and when she came down stairs went about
her household duties and shortly after 9 o’clock went
to his room and discovered his bed had not been slept in.
Then she returned to the kitchen and discovered a note explaining
that he intended ending his life and asking forgiveness.
She then went to the cellar and upon seeing the body rushed
from the house and her screams attracted the attention of
several men who were standing near an automobile conversing.
They ran into the house and cut down the body. Life was already
extinct.
Before becoming clerk at the Post Office Hotel Mr. Kline
had been night clerk at the Hotel Huntington for 19 years
and for many years was prominent in the activities of the
old Saranac Tribe, No. 84, Imp. O. R. M. He and his family
had resided in Easton about 30 years and before coming here
he taught school in Lower Mt. Bethel Township for many years.
He is survived by his widow and the following children:
Mrs. William Shively and Ernest Kline, of Washington, D.
C.; Mrs. Joseph Hammond of Chicago; Mrs. Adam Miller, of
Mountain Lake, N.J., and Hervey Kline, of Easton.
Mr. Kline was a native of Lower Mt. Bethel township and
was a son of the late Jacob and Katherine Kline. In addition
to his wife and four children, he leaves a brother, Samuel
Kline, of Stamford, Conn.
